Is repairability enough? big data insights into smartphone obsolescence and consumer interest in repair

چکیده
A dominant narrative surrounding smartphone lifespans suggests that their objective functional capabilities deteriorate rapidly and if only devices were more repairable consumers would use them longer thereby reducing demand for new production e-waste generation. Here we a big-data approach to help unpack this examine two related yet distinct aspects: performance obsolescence, interest in repair. Examining over 3.5 million iPhone benchmarking test scores, reveal the of remains very stable time does not as common wisdom might suggest. In contrast, testing frequency varies substantially. This discrepancy factors other than meaningfully influence consumers' perceptions functionality obsolescence. Relatedly, our analysis 22 visits website offering free repair manuals revels declines exponentially repairability necessarily prolong consumer's Taken together, findings indicate non-technical aspects, such mental depreciation perceived obsolescence play critical role determining lifespans, suggest focus on technical aspects currently discussed by policy makers is unlikely yield desired extension lifespan. We propose sustainability advocates try avoid narratives planned which have counterproductive impacts consumer's’ repair, instead highlight how well perform time. More broadly, work demonstrates potential using novel datasets directly observe consumer behavior natural settings, improve general understanding issues

Simulation has become the evaluation method of choice for many areas of computer networking research. However, most existing network simulation packages have severe limitations on the size and complexity of the network being modeled. Simulated networks of just a few thousand network elements and a few thousand data ows will quickly exhaust the computing resources in any reasonably sized compute...
متن کاملHow big is big enough? Thinking about contralateral prophylactic mastectomy.
When evaluating the benefit of a therapy, we must consider the effects of uncertainty and the magnitude of the gain or loss, having decided on a metric for outcome differences. With two alternatives (A and B) under consideration, there are three possible conclusions: Option A is substantially better; option B is substantially better; and the options are more or less equal—that is, the decision ...
متن کاملIs Enough Enough? What Is Sufficiency in Biometric Data?
Gait recognition has become a popular new biometric in the last decade. Good recognition results have been achieved using different gait techniques on several databases. However, not much attention has been paid to get major questions: how good are biometrics data; how many subjects are needed to cover diversity of population (hypothetical or actual) in gait and how many samples per subject wil...
